Vandal – “Tonight We Riot” – Release!

This is the debut album from pioneering Tech Funk producer Sam Evans AKA Vandal, a man who has established himself as a musical force over the past decade with his searing electro breaks releases, roof raising DJ sets and punk rock attitude to the music and scene. ‘Tonight we Riot’ has been ten years in the making and draws on material and experiences that have made Evans one of the most highly respected DJ/Producers in his field. From humble beginnings he has developed a following for his Vandal project that borders on the fanatical, his music has been widely used for adverts, TV syncs and computer games, he has had regular support from Radio 1 (achieving a ‘hottest record in the World’ from Zane Lowe for ‘Mad as Hell’) and has travelled the globe, taking up residencies in Berlin and regular spots at Fabric, London. The album is built around 14 tracks and includes classic cuts from the past alongside brand new material, each giving an insight into the intense and evolving sound of Vandal. From the opening bars of ‘Lose It’ it’s clear that this is going to be a full blooded affair, brimming with energy and seismic attitude, previous hits such as ‘Idiots’ , ‘Obey’ and ‘Mad as Hell’ still sound as fresh and rousing as the day they were released and are augmented with some superb new recordings. ‘Life’ featuring vocalist Malcolm Carson comes on like a twisted modern update on Soft Cell, ‘What Cha Got’ is an electro fuelled, dark roller coaster of a track whilst ‘Rave Safe’ and ‘The Wolf’ journey into the realms of rolling techno. Vandal’s ‘Tonight we RiotÕ perfectly captures the sound and feel of the emerging Tech Funk genre, championed by the like of Meat Katie & Elite Force. It is a wonderful fusion of electro, techno, house and breaks, melded into a uniquely intense soundscape that has real depth and serious attitude. Evans’ debut album may have been a decade in the making but it has certainly been worth the wait, this is a superb inaugural long player from an artist who is definitely going to be around for a long time to come….

Producer Q&A – Untold (Bass Music)

The Bass Music Blog recently had a great Q&A with UNTOLD.  Here’s a small clip of the interview with some inspiring notes and information. Be sure to check out their blog for the whole interview.

[via Bass Music Blog] Very pleased this week to be able to introduce this producer Q&A from one of the producers I admire most in the scene; Untold.  You don’t need me to tell you how he’s managed to get himself to the top of the bass music tree without stooping to cheese, populism, or any sort of compromise whatsoever – it’s inspiring.  This week sees the launch of his new sample pack with Loopmasters, which is called ‘Dubstep Producer’.  It’s out now, so go and check it out; or peep a few demo loops below.  I’ll be doing a full review of the pack when I get a minute…

Untold Dubstep Producer – Sample Pack Demo by loopmasters

How do you approach a tune?  Drums first?  Melody?

First off I write the concept down in a notebook. This is usually bullet points with
descriptions of the mood, other tunes or periods I’m referencing for inspiration, sometimes even beat pattern scrawled out in a similar style to a piano roll in the sequencer. Even if I don’t get anything done when I go to the sequencer I’ve got a book full of ideas for later use that are great for skimming through when I’m stuck on a tune.

Once I’ve got a clear concept I’ll gather appropriate samples and build synth patches. I usually start sequencing with drums, but try and get them down quick and move on to the bassline. Sometimes I’ll get the rough rhythm down using temporary sounds, like a 909 kit, then replace the drum hits once I’ve got the bassline working with the rhythm.
What time of day do you work best?

It used to be after midnight, but I’ve slowly learnt to write at any time. Often I’ll have the sequencer open with a tune on the go and add bits throughout the day. This way I spend less time listening to the tune looping on repeat and don’t get as sick of it as I’m building it.
Where do you get your inspiration / motivation from?

I have CD buying and listening binges of specific genres, artists, movements or labels. For instance I’ve bought four Arthur Russell albums this week, last month I bought loads of post punk compilations. The motivation takes care of itself. I’ve always had to write or play music in some form or other.
What do you do when you’re not feeling inspired?

Grab a handful of CD’s from the shelf and go sample hunting, or build new synth patches. Just try and ride it out and not to give myself a hard time.

Sturdy Podcast 002 – Brian Thomas – Future Funk

Brian Thomas has been busy in the last few years making his mark as a DJ and producer in the Orange County area. He has been throwing events for years now with a goal of bringing a fresh perspective to the local EDM scene. In the last year Brian has booked and played alongside such acts as Uberzone, Kid Blue, Frankie Bones and Barry Weaver, to name a few.  Brian has also been busy in the studio first with his EP “The Drop” (which had a heavy remix from Kid Blue), and also pumped out a remix for Simply Jeff’s label Beyond Zilla.  Brian Has another EP due out in August with remix duties from the State-Side-Tech-Funk duo Sifter and Adan, and also has a few more up his sleeve due out before the end of the year.  Brian is full throttle with the progression of the “Anti-Genre” (as Elite Force would put it) Tech-Funk in the US, and for this reason he is proud to become a part of the Sturdy Family.
